What is a canvas mosaic?

When you hear the word 'mosaics' most people are familiar with the idea of taking broken pieces of ceramics and placing them into cement arranged in a design that creates a new artistic image. When I say 'canvas mosaics' it is taking broken down pieces of canvas (or cut up pieces) and securing them on to a new canvas base (such as gluing the pieces down on a new canvas.) The result is a piece of art that has raised parts to make it more 3D, and the cut canvas pieces create an image. Mosaics are also typically colourful. I recommend to paint the cut canvas pieces in warm colours that stand out, and use their complimentary opposite colours for the background. This creates a dynamic play of colours for the art piece.

In 2014 I woke up with an idea of using granite looking spray on a canvas as if it were cement, and gluing the colourful cut pieces of another canvas on it to transfer the image of a fish. I loved the result so I created 3 more to make a series of canvas mosaics featuring a fish, a lobster, a seahorse and a crab. These art pieces made it into my first art exhibit at the Moncton Public Library Art Gallery for December 2015. Since then, these playful images have been sold in prints on cards, mugs, calendars, and other products, after being copyrighted.

Its now 10 years later, and their reprints are still in use, and are featured on my new birthday and Valentine card series, in 2024.

On Saturday, February 24th, 1pm - 3pm, the first workshop on making 'canvas mosaics' is held for 2024, at "The People's Pavilion" workshop room, located at 708 Coverdale Road, Riverview, New Brunswick. (506-800-1777). $10 per registration (all proceeds from this first workshop) will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Riverview (a local charity: https://bgcriverview.com/).

More about this event (Feb.24, 2024, 1pm-3pm):

Free coffee, tea, & juice will be provided.

Free baked cookies for attendees will be made by Janet's Bake Shop - Made With Love

(Bakery is at: 206 Pine Glen Rd, Riverview, NB.).

All art supplies will be provided.

During this art making event, we will be following a simplified process, so anyone can do it. We will not be recreating the old mosaics from 2014. We will be making new mosaic images.

New sample stencil images will be provided to choose from for use, so no individual 'drawing skills' will be needed. This will be a fun workshop to play with paint on a canvas that will then be cut into shapes and glued on to a second canvas, in a way to form an image from the cut pieces. Acrylic paint will be used, so there should be easy clean up. The event is aimed at adults coming together to have some fun making art, while supporting a good cause.

This event is now fully booked.
