For Art Students (Art analysis)
Composition Layout: Centred boat, showing side view. Angled bridge lines. Mainly vertical and horizontal lines with a spiral central image of the boat's wheel. Repeating x marks as part of the bridge design. The background landscape was greyed out and dimmed for details in shadow, for distance perspective. Rough chop in the water and smoke trail shows higher winds and movement in the image.
Colours and painting techniques:
Monotone colours were used (white, grey, black). This is a high-contrast image making use of highlights and shadows. Brush-painted details were based on multiple historical photos to reconstruct ship details and landscape.
