What is the Story / Significance?:

This ship is still operational, out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a training ship for those learning to sail on a tall ship. The Canadian flag flies, as the ship has a home in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Traditions of the past are being passed down to new sailing folk of the modern world, as hands-on lessons are given aboard this sailing vessel.

Art-printed cards are available through www.CanadianCoastalArt.com and at live local shows.

(**On the list of artist's top picks).

For Art Students (Art analysis):

Composition Layout:

The ship is centred, angled to the left. There are angled wavey lines in the foreground, straight horizontal waves and a horizon line, with shadowed edging to create a rounded central spotlight area to draw attention to the centred ship.

Colours and painting techniques:

The sky is a golden canvas hue like aged sails. The light breaks through the shadowed darkness; like learning, like hope. The sea is a contrast of dark depths and light dancing splashes, reflections and sea foam. The artist photographed the original ship and painted it in the same colours. Glazing techniques with watered-down acrylic paint were used to create the corner shadows.
